
What is the NextGen Smart ILA?
An in-line amplifier (ILA) boosts optical signals along long-haul fiber routes so traffic travels farther without degrading. Traditionally, that amplification lives in an ILA hut, a purpose-built shelter dropped along the route. Most of those shelters were engineered to decades-old standards that can’t keep pace with today’s fiber counts, power demands, or AI-era density.
The Fortress NextGen Smart ILA modernizes that model. It is a modular, factory-integrated ILA platform built in standard 8 ft × 40 ft ISO containers, delivered to site and commissioned by a single accountable team. Operators choose low-density and high-density modules, or both, matching fiber capacity and footprint to each site instead of over-building or stranding capacity.

One platform, low to high density
With Fortress NextGen Smart ILA, module types deploy independently or combine into a single hybrid line, so you scale capacity site by site without redesigning from scratch.

Low-Density (LD) module
A cost-efficient container for lighter routes and CO sites: relay racks with amplifier chassis, cooled by a self-contained ductless mini-split system with N+1 redundancy. Ideal where fiber counts are moderate and speed matters.
High-Density (HD) module
Engineered for route-saturation and AI-era density: high-density transport cabinets with rear-door heat-exchanger cooling and a dedicated high-density fiber-management frame, dramatically more fiber and chassis in the same on-site footprint.
