Beyond the Build: The Community Impact of Digital Infrastructure

When we talk about digital infrastructure, it is easy to focus on the technology: compute, connectivity, power, and facilities required to keep our increasingly digital world moving.

But there is another story worth telling.

What can that infrastructure mean for the communities where it is built?

Quincy, Washington offers a compelling example.

Over the past two decades, significant data center investment has helped transform the community's economic and infrastructure landscape. Data centers now represent an estimated 57% of the city's property tax revenue, helping expand the tax base and support investments in schools, public safety, roads, water and wastewater infrastructure, and other community facilities.

The impact extends beyond tax revenue.

Major digital infrastructure projects create demand for construction, engineering, electrical, manufacturing, maintenance, and other skilled services. They can support local businesses, create employment opportunities, and drive investment in the infrastructure needed to accommodate future growth.

Quincy's water reuse program is one example of how the infrastructure surrounding a data center can evolve alongside the facilities themselves. The city developed a water reuse system to support data center operations while reducing reliance on potable groundwater for cooling.

The broader lesson is that digital infrastructure does not exist in isolation.

A new facility may require more power, water, roads, telecommunications, emergency services, and other supporting infrastructure. When that growth is planned thoughtfully, the resulting investment can create a ripple effect that extends well beyond the project itself.

The goal should not simply be to build more.

It should be to build thoughtfully, responsibly, and with the future in mind.

At Fortress, we think about what it takes to build critical infrastructure that can scale with what is next. From in-line amplifier solutions to edge and other mission-critical infrastructure, our focus is on helping clients deploy infrastructure that supports growing digital demands.

Infrastructure is about more than what gets built today.

It is about what that infrastructure makes possible tomorrow, and the lasting value it can create for the communities it serves.
